Helping refugees – and Jesus on social media. The work of the Christian missionary organisation Reach Beyond.

The run-up to Christmas 2024 is the time when the radio series Voice and Hands with Reach Beyond goes out.

In the most recent episodes, we’ve heard about recycling projects working with refugees in Athens, hope and dignity for people fleeing civil war and persecution in Southeast Asia, and the rise of social media ministries by Christian pastors in India.

That’s all been part of episodes five to seven of the series. You can listen again to each one here: https://www.twr.org.uk/show/Voice-and-Hands/

In episode five we were in Southern Europe – on the shores of the Aegean Sea – in Greece, where a unique recycling project for the homeless is underway. It’s a scheme called Trash-2-Treasure that grinds up discarded plastic bottles and other rubbish – but with a message of the hope of salvation from the HANDS of Jesus:

In episode six the focus was on Southeast Asia, where we heard how Reach Beyond is helping young trafficked Rohingya women who’ve been traumatised multiple times – by family death, and by persecution – and sometimes by being told by family members that they’re cursed. We heard how missionaries can share the salvation of Jesus and lift those curses.

And in episode seven, we heard from India, about a new initiative that shares the voice of Jesus with both Christians and non-Christians – through technology. A WhatsApp group that started just a few years ago with less than a hundred members, now has 75-thousand followers across the continent – and posts daily devotionals in five languages. The Pastor – a Reach Beyond partner – says social media can have immediate impact…

The health and community action has developed more recently; but the radio ministry began almost 100 years ago in a wooden shed in Ecuador.

It blossomed into a worldwide service via shortwave that provided programmes in 26 major languages – including Russian, Japanese, and Portuguese as well as 22 indigenous dialects of Latin America.

Today they serve through FM radio, online, and in social media apps. That was the key topic in episode one of our radio series. You can listen again here: https://www.twr.org.uk/show/Voice-and-Hands/

Voice and Hands with Reach Beyond continues through to the end of December. It’s live every Saturday evening at 8 o’clock, repeated on Sunday at 8 in the morning.
